URBAN POLICIES IN SUPPORT OF ‘IRELAND 2040’

12 January 2018A seminar jointly convened by URBACT (IRELAND) and ESPON (IRELAND) recently took place on the 22nd March at the Ashling hotel Dublin.
Organised by the EU/ERDF URBACT and ESPON Ireland programmes and in support of the ‘Ireland 2040’ planning process, the purpose of this event was to debate proposals and policies designed to promote smart, sustainable and inclusive development in Irish cities with explicit reference to the wider EU funding and policy landscape.
As Ireland moves to strengthen the role of its cities - and especially its 2nd tier cities (cities outside of Dublin with more than 50,000 people) - it is imperative that it draws upon the wider intellectual and financial resources which are fermenting across the EU. Joined up thinking will be essential. We reflected then upon how Irish urban policies might usefully evolve in parallel with developments in urban policy funding, policy making and policy transfer at the EU level.
