2nd CTUR Thematic Journal: Topics and Case studies on Economic and social benefits
Edited on
09 October 2017CTUR is an URBACT project made up of 10 European cities looking for joint, effective and sustainable solutions in the field of cruise traffic and urban regeneration. The project led by the city of Naples has just published its second thematic journal entitled " Download Ctur_2nd_thematic_journal_web.pdf (2.46 MB)".
Written by CTUR Lead Expert Vittorio Torbianelli (University of Trieste - Faculty of architecture) and CTUR Thematic Expert Pauline Geoghegan, this second thematic journal is an important output for the CTUR project. Based on the work developed during the seminars by the CTUR network, this journal focuses on the 'Economic and Social Benefits' of the whole shore-side system connected to cruise activities in CTUR partner cities. The title sums up the second of the three macro-themes that have been part of CTUR's formal theme framework which are: physical and environmental components (read the 1st CTUR Thematic journal about it); economic and social benefits; governance.
Economic benefit thus includes the analysis of key components of cruising activities' economic impact on cities, how cities can increase such impact and how cities can use it as a guideline for local decision-making. Regarding social benefit, the journal focuses on cruise-related work impact on the social field and the role of investments on urban areas to attract cruise tourism as social regeneration drivers.
Even though each port city has different features and potential, the journal provides a general analysis of the components of cruise activities' economic benefit. The journal points out that a cruise business oriented organization of the local offer networks can help develop the earning potential to the full in the long term. Naples and Valencia case studies point out that there can be various business development options depending on the type of approach used.
Regarding social benefits, two key parameters are analysed: a sound cruise-related professional development policy can attract cruise lines too, which favours the strengthening of stable relations with cities (Rostock case is studied). Besides housing development plays a relevant role in port regeneration areas that can become attractive for tourists, as Dublin example shows it.
