Kaunas

Kaunas lies at the centre of Kaunas County and is the second largest city in Lithuania with a population of more than 415,700 and the area of 156 sq. km. Founded in the 12th century, Kaunas owes its existence to its favourable geographic at the confluence of the two biggest rivers the Nemunas and the Neris, 100 km from theLthuanian capital Vilnius>and 250 km from the port city Klaipeda.

Kaunas City Municipality plans to develop an aerodrome facility (192 ha) into a recreational facility providing sports and tourism aviation, sports and science and technology park capacity. This will create new jobs for local people in the long term and will encourage economic growth in local and regional level.

The challenge will be to make this development attractive to all parties including government, municipality, local and foreign investors and other stakeholders and secure cultural heritage objectives.

All changes to the site will be made in a sustainable way with consideration of energy efficiency issues such as water, solar power, wind generation etc. Located only 2-3 km from the city centre, the site is accessible on foot, by bicycle public transport etc.
