The Manchester Arts Sustainability Team (MAST) started ten years ago, to explore how the cultural sector could contribute to the city’s first climate change strategy. MAST’s collaborative approach, in a city which recognises the value of culture and is itself demonstrating climate change leadership, established Manchester as a leading example of cultural collaboration on climate. Since 2019 through C-Change, an URBACT transfer network, Manchester has been able to share its model with five cities, and these five cities have been shaping this and making it their own.

On April 29th, the six C-Change cities are coming together to introduce their network and their model and to share their story. What does collaboration look like and how does it work? How to support sector action and capacity-building on climate? What role can city policy play in driving and framing sector action on climate? How are cultural organisations and artists taking action on climate and mobilising people in their cities to act? You will also hear key insights from each city on what they learnt, what was unique in their experience and what difference it has made.

You're invited to join us at the C-change transfer network final event. Register here for more details.

The event will be led by MAST’s Simon Curtis and C-Change Lead Expert Claire Buckley of Julie’s Bicycle, a non-profit organisation empowering the arts and culture to take action on the climate and ecological crisis and long-standing MAST partner.

Agenda:

14:00-14:30 Introduction

To start with we will cover the role of the arts and culture, the MAST story, the Urbact transfer concept and the C-Change network. You will hear from Julie’s Bicycle, MAST and URBACT.

14:30-15:30 C-Change: Arts and Culture Leading Climate Action in Cities

We will explain the C-Change model, across its four strands - collaboration, support, policy and engagement as well as resulting sector action, with short films and insights from all five cities during which you will hear from Águeda’s Head of Culture, Culture Zone Wrocław, Gelsenkirchen’s Climate Action Manager, Šibenik’s Department of Economy, Entrepreneurship and Development and Mantova’s EU Projects and Fundraising Office.

15:30-16:00 Reflection and conclusion

To finish, we will hear from MAST and Manchester City Council on how C-Change has helped Manchester take its approach to the next level. Each of the six cities will reflect on what difference C-Change has made. And we will conclude with a summary of key learnings.

16:00-16:30 Optional breakout sessions

For those who wish to find out more and engage in discussion there will be an extra 30 minutes for breakout sessions with 2 cities per group
