CTUR is an URBACT project made up of 10 European cities looking for joint, effective and sustainable solutions in the field of cruise traffic and urban regeneration. The project led by the city of Naples has just published its PDF icon Download ctur_thematic_journal_1.pdf (4.99 MB) entitled 'Topics and Case studies on Physical and Environmental Components'.

Written by Vittorio Torbianelli, CTUR Lead Expert (University of Trieste - Faculty of architecture), this first thematic journal is an important output for the CTUR project. Based on the topics discussed during the first three CTUR thematic workshops organized between January and December 2009 (Matosinhos, Trieste, Dublin) and the CTUR partner cities' case studies presented during these seminars, this paper is the result of the work capitalised during the first stages of the project. Focussing on transforming, regenerating and adapting the physical and environmental components of the 'city-port system', this thematic journal is particularly addressed to urban planners, civil servants and politicians involved in the development of the strategic harbour area of the cities.

What kind of physical infrastructures and services do city ports need in order to connect port areas to the surrounding territory and to cruise arrival and departure platforms? What should cruise terminals or arrival and departure areas be like? How should the way connecting cities to cruise terminals be in order to encourage visits to city center? and what should the physical environment of cities’ tourist areas be like for both local communities and cruise passengers to benefit from it? What can cities do in order to make improvements in all these aspects? These are the main topics that this thematic journal is dealing with through three main themes 'Accessibility', 'Terminals' and 'Urban Regeneration'.
