URBACT Markets has participated  in the AESOP congress (July 9-12) in Utrecht, one of the world’s premiere urban planning conferences for city planners, researchers, and civil servants dealing with political, social, environmental and economic planning.

URBACT Markets Lead Partner Núria Costa took part in the AESOP event, and URBACT Markets edited a special newsletter to distribute amongst the 1100-or-so delegates. Will Fulford, vice-president of London´s ULSG URBACT Markets group and director of Camdem Market also took part along with Núria Costa in a spcial round table titled “Marketplaces as Urban Development Strategy”, allowing URBACT Markets to spread its know-how to key experts in urban planning.

Other participants in the round table were Professor Arnold Reijndorp (University of Amsterdam / Independent researcher and architect, the Netherlands), Professor. Ching Lin Pang (University of Leuven / Head of Chinese Studies, University of Antwerp, Belgium), and Professor Sophie Watson (Open University / Special Adviser to House of Commons Department of Communities and Local Government Inquiry into Traditional Retail Markets, 2009, UK)

The URBACT Secretariat was keen that the Markets projects participated because this of its ‘relevance’ to the AESOP congress, especiallygiven URBACT Markets highly participative frame in developing its local action plans. The URBACT Programme had its own promotional stand at the venue, with an interactive map showing all the URBACT networks, a screen for Twitter feeds, programme roll-ups, and publications as well as a networking space.
