Local authorities have set up a project as part of their markets offer to inform citizens of Wrocław about why healthy, organic food pays off.

The beginning of April saw URBACT Markets cities visit Wrocław in Poland. One of the highlights was a visit to the Nowy Targ square's Jarmark Produktów Świeżych fresh products food fair.

The Wrocław visit is the latest of a series of study tours to get to know local markets in the URBACT Markets project group, after previous visits to Turin, Barcelona, Dublin and Toulouse.

During the Wrocław study visit, partners saw examples of cooperation between the city and local trade associations, especially looking at how halls and marketplaces were managed, engagement of traders, financing of development activities and promotional campaigns.

Participants also took part in an event at the Jarmark Produktów Świeżych market in the renovated Nowy Targ square, promoting local regional produce.

Nutritional advice to draw in shoppers

The renovated Nowy Targ market square not only has stands with fresh produce; local authorities have set up a project as part of the market offers to inform citizens of Wrocław about why healthy, organic food pays off.

On Thursdays and Fridays till the end of October, citizens can find fresh, 'supplement free’ products at the market, also workshops and culinary demonstrations, nutritional advice, games for children, and tasting sessions.

Nutritionists from the Health Centre in Wrocław offer a 'How to eat healthy and correctly' session once a month, completely for free at the Jarmark Produktów Świeżych market. The food allergies specialist also consults on obesity. The special stand in the marketplace should help slowly change eating habits, say authorities.
