Size and national importance: National importance: UL is the largest and the oldest university in Slovenia and a leading scientific institution in Slovenia. Department of Geography was established in 1919 as part of the Faculty of Arts. It represents the leading geographic educational institution in Slovenia as well as one of the leading research institutions in Slovenia in the field of physical and human geography, regional development, spatial planning, environmental assessment, etc.

Situation
Department of Geography at the Faculty of Arts, University of Ljubljana has a lot of experience and competence in regional and environmental policy formulation and evaluation with specific knowledge and expertise in sustainable land use management systems for the participating network members.Important land use policy instruments have been implemented in Slovenia at the local level in urban areas to accelerate the recycling of brownfields for housing and economic development.

Challenges
The main challenges can be focused on building an integrated (anti-sprawl) land use strategy dealing with housing, economic, agriculture, transport, environmental land use issues at the regional level instead of having sectoral interventions at the national level. In many aspects Slovenia and Ljubljana are good examples of successful competitiveness within the sustainability paradigm in Central and Eastern Europe.
