Sérres
The city of Serres is the main growth pole of the wider valley of Serres, crossed by the Strymonas river, which runs through the greatest number of villages in Greece. It is an important cross-border cooperation center, utilizing its geographical position, population size, transport, cultural and economic infrastructure.The city of Serres and its greater area form an important pole in Northern Greece, possessing unique cultural, historical, economic, ecological characteristics, supported by appropriate, transport, tourist, educational, infrastructure and services.
The Municipality of Serres, through its participation in numerous European projects, in collaboration with various institutions, implemented a series of projects in order to improve sustainable mobility. It recently completed various urban interventions such as relief of traffic congestion, extension of pedestrian zones, bioclimatic constructions, extension of the bicycle lanes and construction of roundabouts in specific areas. Furthermore, new interventions are planned such as further extension of bicycle lanes in order to create a network in the city, with public bicycle stations. A new SUMP is in progress, that will allow the city to formulate a short and long-term strategy for facing mobility and transport problems, in a sustainable way.
Being part of the “Space4People” URBACT network allows Serres to further improve the quantity and quality of attractive public spaces in the Urban area, utilize experiences and good practices of partner areas, but also contribute to the project, with its own good practice examples.
