Barcelona, Venice and Florence are leading a project to create an International Day of Markets recognised by UNESCO.

These cities, members of URBACT Markets, CENTRAL Markets and MARAKANDA, are working to engage international institutions like UNESCO and UN Habitat to get their support for an International Day of Markets to be held in the Spring of 2014. More than 25 cities have already given their support to the initiative, which will be one of the most visible results of the URBACT Markets project in trems of international exposure.

The Manifesto sets out a proposal for creating an International Day of Markets with the active participation of signatories and other cities that believe markets can help change urban quality of life.

Activities will be organized by signatory cites on the same day most likely in the Spring of 2014. There will be a common logo and there'll also be a shared website to promote and cordinate the initiative.

The idea is that the festival will celebrate and highlight the role of markets in developing cities in terms their social, economic, urban planning and environmental characteristics.

The project leaders are currently lobbying international bodies. Venice is communicating with UNESCO to get them to support and recognise the International Day of Markets initiative.

With over 25 cities already supporting the initiative, others are expected to join over the next weeks.
