Oldenburg
Oldenburg is a city in the state of Lower Saxony in the north of Germany. The city is surrounded by agricultural land and farming is a key sector within the local economy. Within Oldenburg, metal working and financial services are key employment sectors. The population of Oldenburg grew rapidly in the immediate aftermath of World War II, with the arrival of more than 40,000 refugees.
Currently, almost 22% of the Oldenburg’s population is from a migrant background, with people from Iraq, Turkey and Poland making up the largest migrant communities. Oldenburg is also home to Europe’s largest Yazidi community and has become the heart of the worldwide Yazidi diaspora.
Through the German national dispersal plan, Oldenburg received over 1400 refugees in 2015, at a rate of around 40 new arrivals per week. The number of refugees who will be allocated for settlement in Oldenburg in 2016 is not yet known, but the rate of arrival has increased from 40 to 100 per week.
