Norderstedt

Norderstedt is a young city, founded in 1970 by resolution of the Schleswig-Holstein state government as the merger of four communities: Friedrichsgabe, Garstedt, Glashütte and Harksheide. Today about 75.000 people live in the fifth largest city of Schleswig-Holstein.As part of the metropolitan region of Hamburg Norderstedt is still increasing. The development of the population in the last 40 years:1970: 58.500 inhabitants1980: 65.800 inhabitants1990: 68.600 inhabitants2000: 72.600 inhabitantsCompared with the population of 75.000 people living today in Norderstedt there are actually about 35.000 persons working here. Nevertheless, this is a good relation between inhabitants and jobs, there are more than 18.000 inhabitants leaving Norderstedt every day for their business (most of them in the direction of Hamburg), but more than 21.000 people shuttle in to work in Norderstedt. For a long time Noderstedt had the image of a green city. It is still in the heads and hearts of the people living here. For example there are 3 raised bogs as Sites of Community importance relating to the Habitats directive. They are part of the green landscape being an important and characteristic element of Norderstedt. The actual slogan of Norderstedt is "one idea ahead ..." - and there are several examples that this slogan is right. One of these examples is the noise action plan, which is the first one in the European Community for an agglomeration.

Norderstedt is a prosperous city with a high density of cars. The large number of cars and the above mentioned commuting traffic are important reasons for a number of traffic promblems the city is confronted with already today. And the road traffic will rise for another 25% until 2020.

Resulting from the traffic, especially the private transport including the trucks, many people are suffering from noise influence. More than 67 % of Norderstedts population live without good sleeping conditions, over 7 % are health endangered by road traffic noise and over 2 % by air traffic noise. With the help of the transport development plan and the noise action plan Norderstedt tries to manage the noise problems within the next years.
