Örebro

Situated in central Sweden, Örebro city has a population of 140,000 and the surrounding region a total of 275,000 inhabitants. The city is midway between Stockholm and Gothenburg, and also Stockholm and Oslo, at a point where national rail and road routes cross, north-south and east-west. The region is the country’s centre for maintenance and repair of trains, wagons and other railway rolling stock. Its central position, along with the facilities of Örebro Airport, has made it a popular location for logistics companies, with several national operators being based in the city. For similar reasons, it is becoming a popular city for conferences and trade fairs.

High technology also has growing role in the local economy. Robotdalen (Robot Valley) is the name given to a corridor between Örebro and Stockholm that is home to some of the world’s leading companies in robotics. Research, development and production are carried in the region, with the main applications being for the industrial and healthcare industries. Three local municipalities are meanwhile involved in the EU Equal programme and have set up a high-tech college—KomTek­—tasked with stimulating interest in technology among young people, especially girls.

Sustainable growth and quality of life are two guiding themes for the city’s local authorities. A particular emphasis has been placed on cycling, with a network of cycle lanes and low-cost bike hire available. A wide range of sporting and leisure activities is available in the town, the mountains and at Lake Hjälmaren. Cultural attractions include the 13th century castle, museums, concert halls and art galleries.
