Munich
The Munich model area is the site of the former Bayern barracks in Freimann, for which the city council decided in 2019 to introduce an innovative recycling concept. The aim is to rebuild the area from the perspective of sustainability while minimizing the impact on the environment as well as the consumption of energy and resources. This includes a comprehensive and efficient recycling of building materials from the demolition buildings as well as excavated earth, which can be reused after appropriate sorting and processing for the new building. Thus, an environmentally friendly planning of the construction process with low transport costs and a low load on the surrounding residential areas and roads can be achieved by reducing truck traffic.
The City of Munich is new in the field of recycling economy in the construction sector. In the former military barracks (Bayernkaserne), the city wants to start a pilot project. The City of Munich will build there a new urban quarter for appr. 15.000 inhabitants. The demolition and new construction will take about 10 years. The demolition will produce about 1.2 million tons of waste. Munich plans to reprocess half of this and make it available for the new buildings. With breaking, sieving and concrete production the city creates secondary raw materials. Among other things, Munich wants to save 93,000 truck trips with 3.3 million kilometers of transport. The aim is for the city of Munich to introduce a circular economy in the construction sector based on the experiences of the pilot project.
