Record crowds of 265,000 visitors gather for city centre gastronomy festival

More than 265,000 people visited Barcelona’s annual 3-day-long gastronomy fair called Mercat de Mercats fair last October. Held mainly in a Plaza in front of the Cathedral in downtown Barcelona, visitors can buy quality foodstuffs, tapas and learn from the best chefs and sommeliers around. 65,000 tickets for tasting products were sold, almost 20% more than during last year’s edition.
The Mayor of Barcelona, Xavier Trias, visited the last day of the fair when Michelin chefs Joan Roca and Quique Dacosta gave a session on the value of local food production in their cooking.
Mercat de Mercats 2014 in numbers
The Mercat de Mercats event featured 40 top chefs with 17 Michelin stars amongst them and a wide variety of local producers and traders. An amazing 265,000 people visited, 5.000 more than in 2013, with more than 3,900 taking part in the 33 free show cooking events. Now in its 5th edition, Mercat de Mercats is organised by the Municipal Institute of Markets.
