Gondomar

Population: 27 047 inhabitantsSurface: 11,6 Km2Unemployment rate: 13,4% Located on the right bank of the River Douro at a mountainous zone cut by fertile valleys, Gondomar is an ancient town whose history goes back, according to legend, to the years between 610 - 612, when the Visigoth King Flavio Gundemaros explored this region rich in gold mines. Today the manufacture of gold and filigree is typical of Gondomar, and his known has Capital of Gold.Gondomar belongs to the Metropolitan Area of Porto and it is located at around 5 km of the city of Porto. Gondomar (S. Cosme) is one of the 12 Parish Council of the Municipality of Gondomar and based in the census of 2001, it has a population of 27.047 habitants (in an area equal to 11,6 Km2).

Before the crisis, of all the 16 municipalities of Oporto (metropolitan area of Oporto), Gondomar already were the third city which has the highest rate of unemployed recorded (13.4%) for individuals aged less than 25 years (data for 2008).
Coordinate with the entire Local Support Group the main challenge for us as a local public authority is to respond to the structural youth unemployment. Our priority investment is to create the synergies to work in entrepreneurship education, vocational training to improve the essential skills, to promote the self- employment, encourage the business creation and entrepreneurship among the young people will be at least the main objectives for promoting employment and labor mobility support.
