Oradea

Oradea City is positioned at the border with Hungary, in the BihorCounty, North-West Region and has a population of 206.000 inhabitants and a size of 115,56km². The strategic assets of Oradea City are its position at the border with Hungary, on the alignment of the future motorway Bucharest-Oradea-Budapest and the fact that Oradea City is the second most developed city from the North-West Region, after Cluj-Napoca, the university and the geothermal resources for tourism and heating. Oradea City -as urban core- has a large influence on the metropolitan area. It has 80% of the total metropolitan population (245.000 inhabitants), and contains the main economic, social and cultural amenities. Oradea plays a role not only at the local scale but also at the regional and national level as the second town of the North-West region. According to the “Bihor County’s Statistics Office” in 2004, the town counted 92% of the work force of the metropolitan area. Main challenges for the city and its hinterland:

  • Creating an integrated system for waste management, water, sewage and water waste treatment at the metropolitan level.
  • Develop its road transport infrastructure; multiply the transport links between the city and some parts of its hinterland, supporting the intermodality.
  • Attracting new investments with added value.
  • Availability of land to build/expand on within the City.
