Barcelona Metropolitan Area

The Barcelona metropolitan area occupies a strategic position in Southern Europe, in a central position of the Mediterranean corridor that connects Spain with the rest of the continent. This privileged position has resulted in its development as the most dynamic urban area of Catalonia.

With more than 600 km2, the area is composed of 36 different municipalities which gather a population of 3.2 million people and includes the agricultural zone of Llobregat Delta, the fully urbanised plain of Barcelona and the large green areas of the massifs of Garraf and Collserola and the Marina mountain range. Currently, this culturally and economically diverse region accounts for more than 50% of Catalonia’s total GDP and close to 10% of Spain’s.

As a formal public institution, AMB was officially born by law in 2010, integrating the former metropolitan entities in charge of urbanism, transport and environment in the metropolitan area. Today, AMB continues a cherished historical tradition of metropolitan collaboration in the area through the management of numerous competences: territorial and urban planning, transport and mobility, environment and sustainability (including waste and water management), housing, economic development and social cohesion. All of them are developed to provide quality services to the population to fulfil their current and future needs.
