Murcia

Murcia is a city in south-eastern Spain, the capital and most populous city of the Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia, and the seventh largest city in the country, with a population of 442,573 inhabitants. Murcia was founded by the emir of Cordoba Abd ar-Rahman II in 825 and nowadays is mainly a services city and a university town. The city, as the capital of the comarca Huerta de Murcia is called Europe’s orchard due to its long agricultural tradition and as a fruit, vegetable, and flower producer and exporter.

The new City Council is very committed to developing a new communication strategy for the city. Even though the City has not had much experience previously in engaging with stakeholders at city-wide scale, they have run remarkable projects on urban regeneration of deprived neighbourhoods under the URBAN program. The great extension of the
City, about 880km2, even though many parts are hardly inhabited, makes the provision of services and involvement of citizens very demanding for the administration, which is
fragmented in 60 districts with local mayors. The use of social media could be a useful way to reach people.
