Igoumenitsa

Igoumenitsa is the capital of the region of Thesprotia and a strategic point for tourism and commerce in northern Greece.

Situated on the cove of the bay of Thesprotia it lays just across the island of Corfu being the closest port to Italy with direct connections to Brindesi, Bari and Ancona. A direct road network connects it to Athens (480km), Thessaloniki (327km) and Ioannina. The closest airports are those of Ioannina (70km), Corfu and Preveza (Aktio – 94km). Areas of great tourist interest are Sivota, Corfu, Parga, the Ionian islands while a number of important archaeological sites can be easily visited from Igoumenitsa.

Igoumenitsa was in Turkish hands until 1913 and only developed as a port after 1923, when the border between Albania and Greece finally adopted. The German occupying forces destroyed Igoumenitsa during their retreat in 1944. With the advent of tourism Igoumenitsa flourished again. On a hill in the town, in a park, are the ruins of a Turkish fortress hidden among the trees.

The port of Igoumenitsa aims to become a top cruise destination in the coming years, thus promoting the beauty of Thesprotia and the areas of tourist interest and natural beauty in the region of Epirus.

Igoumenitsa has an inexhaustible wealth of monuments, which form a whole with many unknown beauties and surprises for visitors. Dozens of fortified and unfortified settlements, military premises, necropolises and hundreds of locations with individual monuments from all periods are scattered throughout the Prefecture.
