Guía de Isora

Guía de Isora is one of the 31 municipalities of Tenerife (Canary Islands, Spain), and is located in the southwest of the island. It occupies an area of 143,43 km2 with 17 differentiated population centers. In this 20,991 inhabitant’s city, the tourism and agriculture sectors are the main economic branches. In addition to a lively local economy, Guía de Isora boasts a rich architectural heritage, beautiful and quiet beaches, natural spaces and a persevering conservation of its culture.

The municipality of Guía de Isora is located in the south west of Tenerife, and is one of the four largest cities on the island. It has 17 population centers divided into three distinct areas: coast area, mid lands and high lands. Guía de Isora shares the geographical structure of the municipalities of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: it goes from the sea to the mountains, covering different ecosystems that have been traditionally used by the local population.

Local Development Agency of the City Council of Guía de Isora principal aim is to discover and evaluate the resources in the municipality to coordinate, manage and implement actions in the short, medium and long term, to promote the sustainable development of the city.  One of the big problems that Guía de Isora has been facing through years is the mobility, because of the dispersion of the population, the prioritization of the private vehicle and the lack of areas dedicated exclusively to the enjoyment of the pedestrians. Currently, Guía de Isora is developing a process of research, planning and definition of strategic lines of action to enhance the improvement of the services and the infrastructure of the municipality, and, specially, a sustainable and efficient mobility: a pedestrianization project in the old town to promote the commercial area and a financing process for build an underground parking in the upper part of the municipality.

Guía de Isora expects that the actions that will be defined in the Integrated Action Plan will generate a rational and sustainable mobility system, based on the establishment of new public spaces dedicated to citizens (both local and tourists).

Exchanging with the rest of the cities of the SPACE4PEOPLE URBACT network on their best practices in public spaces management will boost Guía de Isora to develop a mobility and public use sustainable strategy that will improve the quality of the experience of the residents and the tourists.
