Attica’s URBACT Markets project helped organise the event.

At the end of June the Region of Attica and Athens Development and Destination Management Agency organised an event to promote the areas food culture. Three URBACT II projects related to food teamed up in a novel new approach to promotion.

The 3 URBACT II projects were URBACT Markets (Attica Region involved), Sustainable Food in Urban Communities (Athens Development and Destination Management Agency involved), which both aim to identify and exploit market dynamics to create sustainable socio-economic development and quality of life, and finally Gastronomic Cities (City of Korydallos involved).

Varvakeios Market, the central market in Athens, and its surrounding neighbourhood became the central focus of the event. The idea was to highlight the role of markets as a meeting space of Greek and foreign foods, as well as a driver of urban development and culture. Famous Greek cooks from some of the communities present in the neighbourhood (Nigerian Community in Greece, Community of Afghan Immigrants) created traditional dishes using high-quality produce and traditional food products from various locations near Attica."
