ESIMeC Case Study - Developing an Innovation Plan in the Ripoll River Basin

Sabadell (Catalonia-Spain) is partner in the URBACT project ESIMeC working on how cities can build closer links with employers and help them emerge from the crisis with more sustainable jobs. Under the strategic framework of the Catalan Agency of Innovation and Internationalization, the municipalities located in the Ripoll River Basin including Sabadell agreed to develop an Innovation Plan for the territory. The project was designed at the end of 2006 and started at the end of 2007. From then to 2009 the analysis process took place. The process involved extensive consultation with industry and has resulted in the establishment of a number of industry led clusters leading to new links between the municipality, industry and researchers and contributing to the region’s economic development.

Through the URBACT project ESIMeC, the focus will turn to how Sabadell’s workforce can prepare itself for the jobs which will be created in the new knowledge economy as a direct result of this Innovation Plan.

This case study explores the process used in the Ripoll River Basin area to develop this comprehensive Innovation Plan and provides some of its results and impacts.
