International Week of Markets kicks off with more than sixty activities in Barcelona's local markets.

"Love your market " is the motto for International Week of Markets, a new campaign that Barcelona City Council is running through its Municipal Markets Agency with the aim of highlighting the role of markets.

From 15th May until 7th June, there'll be sixty activities going on in the city's markets, part of a European wide campaign to promote markets.

There'll be tasting nights, medieval markets, vintage fairs and tapas competitions, cooking events, special discounts and much more.... So, something for all tastes and ages, with children's' cooking classes, too! Barcelona also created a special website to keep track of the event at www.estimaelteumercat.cat

This campaign came about thanks to a proposal to create an International Week of Markets to be held in over 20 European cities and following an already established UK campaign called 'Love Your Local Market '. Cities across the continent are organising events during the last two weeks of May to promote the role of their markets.

URBACT Markets partners, and other European markets projects like Central Markets and Marakanda are also taking part. Other cities in Catalonia, like Reus, have also joined the campaign all under the #LYLM, as have the provincial government of outer Barcelona.
