To the city, partner of the USEAct Thematic Network the Grants European Diploma for making 65 initiatives in recent years. It is the only municipality in the country to receive this award in 2013.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe has awarded the city of Barakaldo with the European Diploma, one of the awards given each year in Europe. European Union Flag is a recognition granted to promote the European ideal and is available to very few. Proof of this is that this year have been recognized with this award only Barakaldo and other 24 municipalities, and is the only town in Spain that lies between them.
