Worms

The City of Worms looks back on a changeful history of almost 6000 years. The fertile landscape in the Rhine valley attracted different people over the course of the times. Celts, Vangions, Romans and Franks settled here. Although the city was destroyed several times, this eventful history manifests itself in important archaeological findings and in the urban structure. The roman cathedral St. Peter as the most impressive testimony to the City's past is the one of the greatest medieval churches. Nowadays the city has approximately 83.000 inhibitants and is an important centre between the urban agglomerations Rhine-Main/Frankfurt and Rhine-Neckar. Worms is a welcoming city with friendly ties across borders. Its citizens keep in lively contact with the people of the six twin towns : St. Albans ( UK), Auxerre (France), Parma (Italy), Tiberias (Israel), Bautzen(Germany) and Mobile (USA). In the last years the City of Worms has become an attractive place to live and shop, as well as a cultural centre for the region and beyond. Important enterprises have their base here. Building activities demonstrate the city's positive development. The numerous schools and the University of Applied Sciences are part of a broad and future-oriented education policy. The Citizens enjoy numerous and balanced leisure facilities. Life in the city of Worms today is as colourful and multi-faceted as its eventful history. The City of Worms expects a moderate population growth in the next 10-15 years. This will lead to new residential areas. The city currently investigatea different possibilities to make these new development areas energy-efficient through a combination of energy-efficient building techniques and renewable energy supplies. This takes place in a complex framewoek of national energy policies. The new areas will also influence the development in the existing built-up areas, as pilot projects will demonstrate the possibilities and economic benefits for other property owners.
