Walkshop Cocreating Careers in Riga

13 May 2015The My Generation at Work Walkshop in Riga actually did not include a lot of walking. We went on a bus tour through the city to explore how young people in Riga prepare for their future.
The first stop was the Riga School of Cultures, where we were given an insight in the school’s career programme. The students are guided in choosing a career through career days and choices between different course directions. A number of students voiced their opinions about choosing a career, the schools guidance and future prospects. The second stop was in the middle of a skatepark/basketball court, where we were welcomed by ‘Ghetto daddy’ Raimonds Elbakjans from youth movement ‘Ghetto Games’. He spoke about taking youth of the streets by introducing them to new activities. The third and final stop was at youth centre Kanieris. After a short introduction about the centre, we could take a look around in the former school. The session that followed was started by two students, who talked about juggling studies, working for a living and entrepreneurship. Finally, we listened to presentations by Robert Arnkil, Timo Spangar and Ari-Pekka Leminen about the My Generation at Work programme, the Stop and Go concept and the One-Stop Guidance Centre in Finland.
