Two workshops not to be missed during RFEC Conference!

"The third annual "Regions for Economic Change" conference will take place on 16 and 17 February 2009 in Brussels. Organised by the European Commission's Directorate General for Regional Policy and other Commission services, in conjunction with the Committee of Regions, the theme of the 2009 event is "Networking for Results". As one of the most important events on the regional policy calendar, the conference expects to attract more than 500 participants from regions all over Europe. Through nine workshops, the event will showcase strategies, experiences and projects intended to provide learning and networking opportunities for Structural Funds managing authorities We would like to highlight in particular two specific workshops.

  • Workshop 1C "Migrants and the City: Towards Successful Integration": Monday, 16 February 2009 (15:45 - 17:45)

The aim of this workshop is to show how sharing knowledge and experience between cities can lead to meeting objectives and achieving concrete results in a faster, more reliable and more focussed way. This workhop will be introduced by Tiziana Caponio, FIERI (International and European Forum of Migration Research) and animated by several speakers :  Martin Schieffer, Deputy Head of Unit, European Commission, Justice, Liberty and Security DG, Anna Ludwinek, Research Officer, Living Conditions and Quality of Life, Eurofound, Norbert Bichl, Beratungszentrum für Migranten und Migrantinnen. Please note that Luisa Avedano, Lead Partner of the "Building Healthy Communities" URBACT project will also attend the workshop as a speaker.

  • Workshop 2B "Reshaping cities –Industry reorganising urban economies": Tuesday, 17 February 2009 (10:15 - 12:15)

Industrial reorganisation has consequences for cities and citizens. Joint efforts must be taken to fully exploit the potential of industry for innovation and reshaping urban economies, and of cities for providing attractive and competitive business locations. The workshop will explore how networks can contribute to these processes. Cities and regions with different industrial background will provide examples and share their experience. This workshop will be introduced by Manfred Bergmann, European Commission, Enterprise and Industry DG (tbc) and animated by several speakers: Karl Jasper, Regional Government of North Rhine Westphalia, Edmund Stacchowicz, Mayor, City of Starogard Gda&324;ski and Yann Thoreau La-Salle, Lead Partner of the UNIC (Urban Innovation in Ceramics) URBACT Fast Track Network.
