Tartu Vald

Tartu Vald is a rural municipality in Tartu County in South-Estonia. It was created in 2017 in the process of administrative reform and include former Tartu, Laeva, Tabivere and Piirissaar municipalities. Estonia has 79 municipalities: 15 cities and 64 rural municipalities. Tartu Municipality is located next to Tartu city (Estonian´s second largest city). It has four small boroughs (Äksi, Kõrveküla, Lähte and Vahi) and 39 villages.

It has a population of 10 941 and covers an area of 742 km². Its population density is 14,74 inhab/km². The largest part of the population is between 25-28 years old. The growing population is composed with 49% female and 51% male. The Economy profile of Tartu Municipality is mainly metal and agricultural business. Unemployment rate in the Tartu County has been 2-3% in the recent years.

It is a mostly rural area, more than 25% of the area is under nature protection. The largest island Piirissaar in Lake Peipus with a size of 7,8 km² belongs to Tartu Municipality. It has been a nature preserve as part of the Natura 2000 programme since 1991. Tartu Municipality has an Ice Age Centre, which is a museum dedicated to the understanding of ice ages, located in Äksi village.

It has also a former Russian air base, Raadi Airfield, where was built the Estonian National Museum, it was opened in October 2016. In 2020, estimated 200,000 solar panels will be built on Raadi Airfield, making it the biggest Solar Farm in Estonia.
