Sundvalls

Sundsvall, with 95 000 inhabitants, is located on the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia in the County of Vasternorrland, around 350 km north of Stockholm. The Sundsvall region has a population of 200,000 and is the biggest labour market in Northern Sweden. The town centre is one of the most beautiful in the country. Our economy spans a wide variety of sectors, with a mix of growing local businesses and leading multinational companies. Prominent sectors include pulp and fibre technology, digital services, banking and insurance. Sundsvall is also the principal retail and service centre in Northern Sweden. 11 % of the population is between 16 – 24 years old. 7 % of the inhabitants are foreign born. In 2007 64 % of the 20-24 years old were employed, for Sweden as a whole the number was 62 %.

Our main challenge is the social insertion of young persons, primarily in districts with a significant immigrant population. One goal is to overcome the difficulties by combining language training, sports and cultural activities, formal education and contacts with the labour market. Sundsvall is working with social integration, both in the form of projects and in the form of regular political activities. The partners are several authorities (local and governmental) different NGOs, the local churches and neighbourhood associations. Sundsvall is a member of CLIPS (Cities for Local Integration Policies) and we have visited and hosted cities in the network. Several of the Youth Clubs have experience of voluntary workers and study-exchanges with different European countries.
