B.1. Understanding of integrated and sustainable urban development:
Miguel Sousa has an engineering background with a master degree on “Product Development”. Since the past 10 years that my professional background is on the various dimensions of urban life: environmental, economic, social and cultural. As Lead Expert of Urbact II project named Wood FootPrint, I worked out with the 10 EU cities on integrated urban development and new models for governance. The success of the project could only be achieved by combining physical urban renewal measures with actions promoting education, economic development and social inclusion.
As coordinator of EU-FP7 and CIP projects, such as: CIP-ICT-SSA project AgeingWell and C4BI – Cities for Business Innovation – Network of Urban Procurers providing an integrated approach to the challenge of urban innovation, I developed a deep understanding of integrated and sustainable urban development. Also, I’m engaged in the innovative H2020 project for Portugal North region, named NORTEXCEL2020, that as the goal to creating a centre of Excellence on Medical Devices in the North Region to boost RDI excellence.
I’m a regular speaker on Innovation, Financial instruments, EU policies, European Territorial Cooperation, sustainable urban development in conferences at national and international level, as it happen recently in my participation on the Urbact III National info day in Portugal in close cooperation with the national contact point for Urbact programme.
B.2. Understanding of exchange and learning processes at transnational level:
In the past 15 years I was engaged in the coordination and supervision of several EU transnational projects. Since EU FP6 with a project named, “Support To Associated Countries and New Member States – STAR-NET, with a network of 16 European organizations that worked together to facilitate the integration of 10 new member states in the EU. Also, in the coordination and supervisor of SURTEC - INTERREG IIIB SUDOE – AURN - The aim of project SURTEC is to act in the scope of innovation regional systems interactions’ and this way to facilitate the absorption of research results in the local socioeconomic region.
In EU FP7, the CIVITAS WIKI (2012-2015) – Coordination and Support Action (CSA) for CIVITAS PLUS II, I coordinate and manage an interactive cooperation between cities, positive interaction between other projects in the CIVITAS community, a well perceived Support Function, and creating interest about CIVITAS among potential follower cities in Europe, and for the FP7 - Capacities - C4BI - Network of Urban Procurers providing an integrated approach to the challenge of urban innovation.
In the past 3 years I was the Lead Expert of Urbact II project named Wood FootPrint that organized 10 transnational meeting in 10 EU cities, working out 5 themes linked to integrated and sustainable urban development. During these meetings I worked out with more than 150 organizations belonging to the cities ULSGs.

Miguel Sousa has a proven experience in designing and delivering transnational exchange and learning activities as can be understood in more than 30 EU projects that he coordinated over the last 15 years. He is an invited speaker on Innovation, EU policies, European Territorial Cooperation, Energy, Transport and Information Technologies topics in conferences at national and international level, having been invited speaker on events organized by the European Commission, Workshops on New Member States, the Government of Portugal, and the regional governments.
Since 2012 that he is an Ubact Lead Expert for the Wood FootPrint project “Addressing the challenge of the urban footprint left in European cities by transforming manufacturing sectors”
Mr Sousa is also member of the Portuguese “National Network of Mentors for Young entrepreneurs”, a national initiative promoted by the Portuguese government to foster entrepreneurship of young graduates, where has been mentoring several Start-up projects and he is the CEO of Index Talent a business angel fund.
He is evaluator of several EU programmes, such as H2020, Eureka – Eurosatrs, H2020 Fast Track to Innovation and CIP Eco-innovation programme and ENPI CBCMED programme.
He is also, certified expert in R&D+innovation management by NP 4457:2007 and NP 4458:2007 and certified as an auditor by ISO 19011 in May 2009.

The CIP-ICT-PSP network named Ageingwell (http://ict-ageingwell.net/) that I coordinated from 2012 to 2014 is a network a 16 founding members and during the enlargement of the network we closed with 78 organizations in our community, covering R&D organizations, municipalities, hospitals, Start-UPs, Large companies, business associations and other.
Another example is the Health C – Improving Crisis Communication Skills in Health Emergency Management http://healthc-project.eu/en/. The project started in October 2012, and it was a 2 years initiative co-founded by the EC through the LLP – Leonardo da Vinci. The project aimed at supporting health authorities’ staff in development of competences required for managing communication in emergency situations caused by a health crisis in a scenario of transnational emergencies. The main achievements of the HEALTH C project include the development of a training course in communication in emergency situation in and the respective training material, including a tool-kit.

As Lead Expert of Urbact II project named Wood FootPrint I worked out with the 10 EU cities on integrated urban development and new models for governance. In the project as I mainly used the Urbact Toolkit for the animation, planning and monitoring the project.
C4BI (2013-2014) – Cities for Business Innovation - through the organization of events intended for policy-makers and innovation practitioners for the promotion of trans-national innovation policy cooperation activities and the sharing of experiences regarding the transferability assessments made to the selected good practices.

I was responsible to review and adapt the Urbact Toolkit to Portuguese language.
Co-organize with the Portuguese Urbact National Infoday with the Portuguese Urbact NCP. On the first day I acted as animator and moderator of a session with all Portuguese cities that are participating in Urbact II and on the second day I organize a round table under the theme, how cities can be prepared for Urbact III.
I act as animator and moderator during the Urbact Summer University and in the Urbact City Festival I organized a walkshop around Riga for more than 40 participants from different EU countries.
