Last 21-22nd October, Salford held the second Thematic Seminar in the framework of the NeT-TOPIC network. The event under the title "BUILDING NEW URBAN IDENTITIES - from monofunctional to multifunctional cities", was foscused on the development and consolidation of identity for intermediate cities in transformation.

Quite often peripheral cities in metropolitan areas have been associated to the image of industrial, fragmented, dormitory cities, etc. These cities face the challenge of transforming from peripheral cities to central cities, from residential to day time cities (university, administrative or business centres), from industrial to technological/knowledge/service cities, i.e., from monofunctional to multifunctional cities. In this context, after the industrial decline, the host city, with an important industry past, has recently embarked upon a massive transformation: regenerating areas that have been affected by population and industry decline. The city is moving towards multifunction: with leisure spaces, high quality housing and employment opportunities.

The second seminar intended to gather expert speakers on the theme as well as to present the cases of 4 NeT-TOPIC cities with an important experience on the issues dealt: Salford, Haidari, Kladno & L'Hospitalet. The event was focused on the typical physical, social and economic challenges faced by cities located on the periphery of major urban centres. Through effectives planning and regeneration, a clear identity can be developed: helping to attract investment, improve social conditions, and ultimately, transform the city into modern, multifunctional areas.

Examining the potential dilemmas faced by decision makers in the European context, the seminar investigates the role of local governance and urban regeneration to achieve a new city identity, looking specifically at the experiences of the NeT-TOPIC partners.

A Thematic Publication on the interventions and conclusions of the Second Seminar will be available in short. For the moment you can consult the Position Paper (OUTPUTS' SECTION) elaborated by NeT-TOPIC partners where they express their experiences and concerns in relation to the theme dealt in order to offer a real framework to ensure a clear focus for the seminar.

Seminar presentations available at "OUR OUTPUT SECTION".
