Sebes

Sebes, a town of 32.000 inhabitants is lovated in the south part of Transylvania, 15 kilometers far from Alba-lulia, its county residence. During ancient times Dacians inhabited the city area and later on, in the Middle Ages when it became a Saxon settlement (Mallembach), developed and prospered economically politically and culturally. Presently the development of Sebes is a consequence of its position at the junction of important European /national and local roads. The town is crossed by E81 national road going to Alba-lulia and E68 national road connecting it with Sibiu and Deva. This infrastructure and geographic condition attracted investments during the last 15 years and facilitated the development of large industrial sites (mostly timber factories). In the same time proof to different culural influences in the history and urban development of Sebes stand valuable historic sites- the town fortifications and its tower documented since 1387, the Evangelical Parisch Church, St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Monastery, etc.

Sebes lovation relative to the national road network benefited its economical development but also induced transit traffic and high pollution levels. Consequently the motorized traffic monopolized the streets of the historic central area leaving no place for non-motorized modes of transport (walking and cycling). But while town's periphery is being populated with large industrial sites the centre its inhabitants as an unfriendly and unhealthy enviroment.
In this context the main challenge for Sebes is to relocate the transit traffic and to make its centre an enjoyable place to be and travel. Other important issues are: the reorientation of inhabitants travel behavior form motorized transport towards walking and cycling and the pedestrianisation of the historic centre.
