Schiedam

Schiedam is located in the metropolitan region of Rotterdam and The Hague in the province of South Holland. It has nearly 80.000 inhabitants. Over time, Schiedam has worked to promote upward social mobility by - among other things - improving its housing stock and facilities. Its surrounding historic windmills provide important landmarks for the city.

Schiedam is located in the metropolitan region of Rotterdam and The Hague. The city has a young population. 43% of its citizens have a migration background. Main industries are trade, healthcare, business services, consultancy, manufacturing and offshore. The city has a lot of cheaper housing and many low-income households.

Schiedam was engaged in the URBACT transfer network TechRevolution. Starting in 2021 it is a partner in the URBACT Action Planning Network Global Goals for Cities. For Schiedam, the emphasis lies on the monitoring of the global goals.

Schiedam has been working with global goals since 2017. Participation in the URBACT network Global goals for cities offers the possibility to develop a local monitor and improve the local practice of global goals in Schiedam. The global goals improve the cooperation between city and municipality. They offer clear goals and they are concrete and understandable for a broader audience. The global goals provide a basis for a strategy aimed at a sustainable and inclusive development of the city. Monitoring of the global goals also gives an insight into the societal impact of what the municipality is doing.
