Starting situation

One of the objectives of Santurtzi municipality is to promote local development through the definition and implementation of municipal policies that improve the quality of life and social welfare of our citizens. In the context of the current economic crisis, in the industrial area where Santurtzi municipality is located, the unemployment rate has suffered a continuous and significant increase as a direct consequence of the collapse of productive sectors such as industry, construction and service sector. It is particularly important to redefine and create new and innovative municipal policies to improve social cohesion and inclusion through methodologies and projects that address social needs and new challenges. It is necessary to detect opportunities to facilitate business and employment creation and to increase social welfare quality, through the collaboration of public, private and third sector (social economy). The main social problems in those areas considered as priorities are: elderly, unemployment, social inclusion, health and education.

Main challenges

In the next years, the main challenge of Santurtzi municipality is to develop some new innovative services for its citizens in the following areas:
  • Entrepreneurship and local development to fight against the high unemployment rates;
  • New services for senior citizens: health and leisure;
  • New services for children and teenagers, working at school, street and family levels; and
