Santa Cruz De Tenerife

Santa Cruz is a municipality located in e northeast of the island of Tenerife, on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, the largest of the seven islands that make up the Canary Islands and is one of the two capitals of the autonomous community, a position that it shares with the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. It is the capital of the province that groups together the western islands, Tenerife, La Gomera, El Hierro and La Palma. It covers an area of approximately 150.56 km2 of the total surface area of Tenerife, which is 2034.38 km2. Santa Cruz is an Atlantic, maritime port, nestled in a bay that has 58 kilometres of coastline. It is divided by the Santos Ravine. It also has a large Rural Park, called Anaga, and 7 kilometres from the city centre is Teresitas Beach with its white sand that was shipped from the Sahara. Santa Cruz de Tenerife has 228,009 inhabitants, accounting for a quarter of the island population, which stands at almost 900,000.The population density in Santa Cruz municipality is about 1,500 inhabitants/ km2. 8% of the city’s residents come from other countries, giving it cultural diversity and a cosmopolitan flavour.

We are thinking in URBACT as a formula that allows us to improve our situation of crisis across the mutual knowledge, and by means of the experiences that we will obtain about realizing a Local Action Plan that will be measurable, contrastable and verifiable and that allows us to confront the future with new strategies and tools.

The main subject/s being worked on at local level are:

▬ Local governance to obtain Socially-Responsible Territories.

▬ Creation of new sustainable and socially responsible companies in emerging sectors based on innovation and knowledge, by creating innovative clusters.

▬ Design of innovative methods for job training and career advice, which facilitates the rapid vocational rehabilitation of unemployed people from declining sectors, and fosters the proactivity and commitment of workers by improving their skills, competences and labor mobility, integrating Local Employment Development policies with ICT- intensive methods (Innovative approach to the Local dimension of the Employment policies in the National Reform Plans, Agenda 2020).

▬ Smart cities: making the cities more attractive to investment and the creation of sustainable and innovative companies.
