Reggio Calabria

The City of Reggio Calabria is the regional capital, and is located in front of the strait of Messina. Its population amounts to 185.577 inhabitants, whereas the larger urban area comprises approx. 260.000 people. Reggio Calabria is the centre of an important touristic and cultural area, and hosts a large university. Although its foundation dates back to the 8th Century b.C., most of the urban structure is based on the reconstruction undertaken after the 1908 earthquake, which destroyed most of the historic settlement. The particular orographic conformation of the landscape has produced its peculiar form, squeezed between the Aspromonte hills and the sea. Like most of its surrounding region, Reggio Calabria today lacks a well-developed industrial and infrastructural system, which in turn gives place to slow economic development. The tourist sector, on the other hand, is particularly flourishing, and has been rising steadily during the past decades. Web site:

The local situation of new and existing housing in Reggio Calabria is characterised by the lack of clear principles regarding sustainability standards. LAP will therefore focus on establishing policies for the implementation of quality guidelines for both new building and retrofitting in the housing sector. This will imply the involvement of the LSG and the University of Reggio Calabria, who will serve as “consultant”, together with other PPs, within the WG. LSG involvement will be of great importance given the necessity of establishing shared guidelines and quality criteria for housing construction and retrofitting. A strategic role will be attributed to the authorities which can orient the key strategies of management and intervention on local building policies. The activities which these authorities will lead will consist in the on-site experimentation and validation of the design code for sustainable housing design and retrofitting.
