The Commission launched on November 3rd, 2008 a consultation on the Baltic Sea Region. It is designed for the Member States, regional and local authorities, NGOs, inter-governmental institutions and the general public.

"The European Commission is inviting all stakeholders in the region to respond to a number of targeted questions before 31 December 2008. The aim of the consultation is to outline the contours of future European strategy regarding the Baltic Sea Region, scheduled to be unveiled in June 2009. In particular, the objective is to improve the state of the environment and the overall competitiveness of the region. The ongoing consultation process will lead to a proposal for an EU strategy in the form of a Commission Communication to be published in June 2009. This will be accompanied by an action plan identifying key actors, financial instruments to be used for implementation and a timeframe for completion. The adoption of the Strategy by the Member States will be one of the priorities of the Swedish Presidency in the second half of 2009.

The next Baltic Sea Region conferences/debates will take place in Gdansk (13 November), Copenhagen (1-2 December), Helsinki (9 December) and Rostock (5-6 February 2009). Read more:
