"The European Commission published a new brochure entitled "Promoting sustainable urban development in Europe"."

" It summarises the experience gained during the Community URBAN initiative since the first pilot projects of 1989. It also presents a series of specific examples and recommendations designed to serve as inspiration for the various regions. The URBACT Programme is in particular pointed up in this document. It also reiterated the principles of 'integrated urban development' outlined by the European Union, i.e. the need to incorporate each urban project into a more global development strategy for cities, along with specific objectives. For example, new green spaces may play a part in a project to renovate a run-down area and new modes of transport must take energy efficiency into account, as well as a reduction in air and noise pollution.
