Potenza
The FUA of Potenza (IT023) is classified as a Small Urban Area; the total population in the FUA is of 132,757 inhabitants (OECD 2012). According to the Italian classification of Local Labour Systems (Italian Statistical Institute, 2011), which mostly fits with the FUA concept, the functional area of Potenza embraces 32 municipalities, all included within the administrative boundary of the Basilicata Region (NUTS 2) and of the Province of Potenza (NUTS 3). The city alone, with its 66.780 inhabitants, has 41% of the resident population of the entire functional area (Italian Statistical Institute Census of Population, 2011). The other municipalities have count than 8% of the total population of the area. The Municipality of Potenza is the core of its FUA.
Despite the relatively small population of the Municipality and of its FUA, the city is characterized by the presence of several services of local and regional interest, related to the fact that Potenza is the Capital of the Basilicata Region.
Potenza is therefore home to quite a few urban facilities (hospital, university, bishop, prefecture, local offices of of ministries, courts) and economic actors (e.g. banks) that influence overall Region and/or Province.
