Porto Metropolitan Area (AMP)
At AMP you can find an immense and diverse natural and architectural heritage to visit and experience, while enjoying modern urban spaces and recent technologies. The region sits in a network of sea, river and mountain with unique features. The area is also known for its gastronomy: from the delight of an Atlantic red-hot fish from Póvoa de Varzim to Espinho, to the wine from the Douro region. They are authentic flavours that the memory of taste sensations will undoubtedly catalog.
Its peculiar sea coast has greatly contributed to the development of the northern region, and has been internationally recognized for the very unique therapeutic properties of its seafront (bathing was a renown ritual associated with a medical prescription). The Tidal Pool, designed by architect Álvaro Siza Vieira and classified as a National Monument, represents this symbiosis of man and the sea very well.
The 17 municipalities that make up the Porto Metropolitan Area have unique identity characteristics that give the metropolitan territory its cultural diversity. This identity / diversity is reflected in the multitude of gastronomic, sport, nature and cultural programs that offer visitors and locals unique experiences.
