Education throughout life as an element of intergenerational cooperation and building social respect towards the elderly.

Topics

  1. Education throughout life
  2. Intergenerational Social Gardens

Main policy issue to be addressed in relation to the selected topics

Intergenerational relations are the basis for the functioning of every society. We are living in a world that is rapidly changing. The rapid pace of change and technological progress make the knowledge and information collected throughout life quickly become outdated. There is a lack of ties and dependencies between the young and the elderly. In order to prevent this, it is necessary to develop a space for intergenerational contacts not only in the family but also outside it (eg in neighbouring circles, at school, at work), based not on the hierarchy, but on the partnership. Nowadays, the position "Master and Student" is not attributed to age, but depends on the skills and experience that both young and old have. This new situation requires openness to change roles, mutual learning and listening. Both young and old must make an effort to meet on a partner basis. What is important is mutual curiosity, openness to otherness. Intergenerational cooperation is one of the most effective methods of activating older people. Meetings of seniors and children are a platform for the exchange of various experiences and skills. Seniors share their knowledge and experience in areas with which children have limited contact on a daily basis. Young people, on the other hand, show things that older people have little idea of and prove that they can teach them. The project aims to teach mutual good intergenerational cooperation.

Useful Information

We are looking for partners among cities, municipalities, regions, universities, schools etc. all over Europe. We'd like to involve partners with various levels of experience regardless of the size and structure.
The TOYLAB project focuses on intergenerational activities that are based on 4 thematic pillars that directly pose challenges for both the youngest generations and seniors. We believe that the cooperation of these two environments will affect many aspects of perceiving the problems of the modern world together with the perspective of younger and older people living in medium and small towns.
4 thematic pillars:
- Culture,
- Environmental Protection,
Society,
- Health.
Our main goal is to combine generations by communicating the space they share. We know that an appropriate form of exchange of knowledge and experience will make the society become free of lifelong education and being active regardless of age. By broadening the horizons, both generations will learn different perspectives of looking at problems and topics that directly affect each of us.
