We want to close circular loops of scrap textiles in the local environment by developing repairing hubs, promote social inclusion and employment.

Topics

  1. Circular economies
  2. citizen participation
  3. Jobs and skills

Main policy issue to be addressed in relation to the selected topics

The goal of the project is to collect as much waste textiles as possible separately and to use it in the local environment. In general, the government last year set up the law to reduce the use of plastic bags, but this law allows certain exceptions, for example, for fruit and vegetables. This is the reason we want to connect the waste textiles and the food markets. From scrap textiles through the promotion of scarce professions such as sewing we want to encourage the purchase of textile bags that would be sewed and later used/sell on the market. We also see the possibility of setting up a shop in the market, where people for lower prices would have the opportunity to fix their clothes that are still useful. Through the project we see the opportunity to promote social inclusion and employment in searched but among young generations not so appreciated professions. We also see the opportunity in cooperation with young fashion designers (in Maribor we have a designer high school). Other aspect of the use of the scrap textile is related to social responsibility - the care of abandoned animals. From scrap textiles, through programs of awareness raising that are already carried out in kindergartens and schools, we would make animal toys, which would be sold through (mainly online) bidding, and the proceeds would be dedicated for the supply of these animals.

Useful Information

We are looking for partners to build and develop concepts of re-use, including the connection with social entrepreneurship that contributes significantly to sustainable development. We are a public utility company owned by 11 municipalities, the largest owner is the Municipality of Maribor.

Our added value is therefore every day connection with our users, we perform waste management policies, set up by the city of Maribor, but we also significantly shape the waste management and circular economy policies in Maribor. Our main goal is to perform waste management in terms of circular economy, with the main objective on wealth and sustainable environment for our users. Our city is less developed region in EU, it has around 100,000 inhabitants and would like to participate in the project with partners of similar size.

Due to our goals to implement good practices in waste management, changing the habits of our users, develop awareness in re-use and put the city on the re-use map of EU we are looking for similar companies and cities or city squares that already have similar practices or are in the process of developing them. Maybe in other types of waste or other activities, planned in the project (other hubs …), but the key point and main objective is sustainable re-use. We are also prepared to cooperate and contribute in the phase of writing the application.
