The Municipality of Thessaloniki is the main public stakeholder representing the local authority for the city of Thessaloniki.It generally aims to the city development in several levels referring to civil, social, technical and cultural matters, through the provision of services, the coordination of the public instruments, the facing of the city’s challenges and the general supervision of the legislation.

The city is the developmental Pole of the South Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the Regions of Central Macedonia and Thrace. It is placed at the crossroads of major transport routes, linking Asia to Europe and the Central Balkans to the Mediterranean, endowed with an outstanding natural harbour and a wide zone of influence, Thessaloniki has always been an important cultural, social, commercial and economic centre.

Among other city networks, the Municipality of Thessaloniki is a member of The Digital Cities Challenge of EC. The Digital Cities Challenge is a tailored programme of coaching and facilitation launched by the European Commission to help 41 cities develop and implement digital policies that can transform day to day life for residents, businesses, workers, and entrepreneurs.

Cities for the above mentioned network could establish an action planning URBACT III network as a next step, to commonly work on focusing in specific digital cities fields.
