  2. City Branding
  3. Local Economy Development -Social Innovation -Local community inclusion and participation

Main policy issue to be addressed in relation to the selected topics

The town of Borgomanero has always been polycentric, geographically and socially speaking, with its highly commercial city centre and around it five hamlets, everyone with their centre, public services and community.  The economic and industrial crisis, the concentration of businesses in shopping centers, the reduction of public services and the social changes in the resident population have impoverished the city centre and the surrounding hamlets of their community value and social cohesion.  In the 2018 the Administration have commissioned a masterplan for landscape redevelopment of the municipal territory looking to sustainable usability.  This masterplan, delivered in February 2019, highlighted the strategic positioning of the city centre of Borgomanero with respect to its surrounding hamlets but above all the interconnections and reciprocity with them.  Therefore the targets of the Urbact Network will be: • rethink the city centre to reactivate the sense of community in a larger perspective, involving the smaller surrounding hamlets and making a circular flow of exchange of assets, experiences and common activities; • renewing the commercial vocation of the city centre by involving the innovative productive realities of the territory and at km 0; • rethink the city centre in a people-oriented dimension; • bring city and hamlet centres back as places of urban attractiveness and social cohesion.

Useful Information

Borgomanero is the most important urban center of the northern part of the province of Novara and extends for 32.36 sq. Km. The inhabitants are 21.719 (ISTAT 2018). The average altitude is 308 meters above sea level. The landscape is characterized by the Alps chain. It is located south of Lake Orta and south-west of Lake Maggiore, in the northern part of the Novara plain; it is crossed by the river Agogna that creeps between the hills of San Michele, Maggiate and Santa Cristina in the east and the hills of Vergano, Colombaro and Cureggio to the west.
The population is divided into the historic center of Borgomanero and the 5 main hamlets of Santa Cristina, Santo Stefano, Santa Croce, San Marco and Vergano. The city, as a whole, has a polycentric structure.
The urban layout of the historic center is built on the late medieval model of the crux viarum. It was a natural crossroads of the routes that led from Novara to the Orta Riviera and the Sempione, and from Turin and Valsesia to Lake Maggiore. Therefore the village of Borgomanero became a reference point for trade.
Nowadays Borgomanero is a modern town, but with a strong historical and cultural identity, that has about 600 commercial activities, 650 craft enterprises and 300 small and medium-sized industries.
