As part of the Belgian Presidency of the European Union, the Brussels-Capital Region will hold an international conference entitled: "Sustainable housing: a tool for social cohesion?" to be held on 23 and 24 November 2010 in Brussels. This international conference is a follow-up to the work and conclusions of the informal ministerial meeting of the Ministers for Housing held last June in Toledo, under the Spanish Presidency. URBACT project representatives will speak at the conference.

Environmental and climate-related constraints are having an ever-increasing impact on our societies. The EU has adopted an ambitious energy/climate plan in which housing policies will have an important role to play. How can we make the most of this constraint in order to better structure the way the environmental and social dimensions are incorporated within our policies and practices? How can we take the opportunity presented by the vital investments that must be made in order to foster a new energy culture within housing?

During this conference, participants will discuss the way in which policies to upgrade energy performance in housing can contribute to strengthening social cohesion and thus to supplying an effective tool for combating energy poverty.

Several URBACT projects are directly or indirectly dealing with these housing issues. In particular, the SUITE URBACT project is working on how to integrate social, economic and environmental sustainability in urban housing programmes for new construction and for the regeneration of the housing stock. Heidrun Feigelfeld, SUITE project Lead Expert, Wolfgang Kuehn, representative of Hamburg, partner city in the SUITE project, as well as Philip Stein, URBACT Thematic Pole Manager, are speakers for the conference.
