After three years of work and exchanges, the OP-ACT Project is coming to a close. Its Final Conference is taking place in Leoben, Austria, on the 8 November 2012.

The OP-ACT Project
OP-ACT, Options of actions, brought together an impressive eleven European cities from ten different countries to work and exchange on the strategic positioning of small and medium sized cities. Led by the city of Leoben in Austria, the project tackled the specific issues of demographic change, advanced de-industrialization and job losses in small and medium size cities, in the context of the current economic downturn.

The main focus was given to the implementation of a sustainable and efficient financial and economic structure within the cities, in order to overcome problems related to the economic crisis. Moreover, to counteract the problem of declining population figures (urban shrinkage), the need was stressed to providing attractive social and living conditions to attract new inhabitants and to satisfy existing inhabitants expectations. Last but not least, the image building of a sustainable city was brought up, something that can also be achieved through better cooperations within a city between culture and tourism or education facilities and local enterprises.
