Sigulda
The Sigulda District was formed by joining together Sigulda town and three parishes - Sigulda, More and Allazi. The population of Sigulda District is steadily growing reaching more than 18 500 inhabitants in January 2017, about 64 % of which live in Sigulda town. Sigulda is one of the few municipalities in Latvia with a positive birth rate; it also attracts new inhabitants from other areas. This can be explained by its closeness to Riga and the high quality of living it offers (educational facilities, sports and active leisure offer, social services, regional hospital, variety of cultural events etc.)
Sigulda is a tourism destination with about 600 000 visitors per year. The main assets for tourism are nature (Gauja National Park), history, culture and leisure. One of the cultural heritage monuments with high value and unused potential is the Sigulda Castle Complex. During the coming years Sigulda District Council foresees a complete renewal and revitalization of the Sigulda Castle Complex, investing about 9 million euros which will create about 100 jobs.
The main goal of the development strategy for the Sigulda Castle Complex is to turn the Complex into the creative place where entrepreneurships can successfully develop and more generally into an open space for both locals and guests to recreate, educate and work. The implementation of the above-mentioned strategy will be happening within the URBACT INT-HERIT network.
