Lomza

Lomza is a city in north-eastern Poland with about 60 000 inhabitants. There are 8 kindergartens, 6 primary schools, 6 high schools, and 3 boarding schools. It is situated alongside the Narew river. Lomza is one of the economic, educational and cultural centres of Masovia. It lends its name to the protected area of Lomza Landscape Park. What is more, the city is a part of the Green Lungs of Poland, which is a region unique on a European scale. The economy of Lomza is closely connected to its natural enviroment, with agriculture and forestry industries at the forefront of the region’s economic development. The largest companies employ less than 1 000 workers, even though a number of firms are listed on Podlasie Top Hundred Entrpreneurs. Among them, the Lomza Brewery, Domel (producer of unleaded windows), Kondrad (importer of farm animals) and PEPEES (producer of potato starch).

One of the policy challenges in Lomza is to create a legal contract between eco-farmers (suppliers) and public institutions (kindergartens, primary schools, boarding schools – recipients). At present there is only one kindergarten which buys fruits and vegetables directly from eco-farmers.

In the future, we would like to create a Diet Policy. We believe that a legal contract between eco-farmers and public institutions will be one of the parts of a Diet Policy. By this regulation we would like to encourage farmers to change their homesteads into organic farming homesteads, because there are still no enough eco-farmers to supply to all public canteens in Lomza.
