Creative Spillovers:

Creative spillovers  are about putting the innovation potential of cultural and creative industries at the service of other industries or services.

Many of the most successful companies in the world have succeed in making use of creative talent, the question for cities is whether this can be accelerated and intensified through a policy driven approach.  The final report of Creative Spin written by Philippe Kern shows how partner cities have achieved this in sectors as varied as manufacturing, healthcare, tourism, information and communication technologies, green urban development and education and training. It highlights practices such as Designregio in Kortrijk (BE), Ars Electronica in Linz (AT) and the Art walk in Essen as well as explaining the elements of the Mons creative ecosystem.  Further examples include the degree course in industrial product design in Bologna, the Budafabriek in Kortrijk and Rotterdam’s use of financial incentives.  The report reviews the local action plans in the eight partner cities of Birmingham, Bologna, Essen, Kortrijk, Kosice, Mons, Rotterdam and Tallinn.   It concludes with key learning points emphasising that all European cities have a wealth of cultural resources that can be deployed with the aim of encouraging spillovers.  http://urbact.eu/creative-spin-final-report
